Foodie Pen Pal Reveal~June

It’s that time again! I love the Foodie Pen Pal program and am so happy that I decided to participate! This was my second month and it was even better than the first! I received my box from Caroline, a blog reader in Wisconsin. And she sent me the most perfect treats!

I felt like she knew exactly the right things to send me, everything was awesome! Included in the box were all local treats from Wisconsin.

The very first thing I opened was the Dark Chocolate covered Cherries. The cherries are dried and these are so rich and yummy that I just eat one or two at a time, savoring them. I still have about 1/3 of the package left.

Next were the toffees… I love toffee so I was really excited to see both butter toffee and pistachio toffee in my box. The squares were quite large, so I was able to make this treat last for a few days.

Also in the box were some Potter’s crackers which were divine. I am a carb-aholic, I have mentioned this before, and I really love crackers. These were so good just on their own, and even better with cheese! The only thing that I haven’t opened yet is the Slack’s Red Raspberry Jam, and that’s only because I have an open jar of Raspberry preserves in the fridge! Raspberry is my favorite of all jams, jellies, preserves etc! All in all this box was a huge win for me and Caroline did an awesome job!!

I sent my box to Amorette, another blog reader in Texas. Unfortunately I haven’t heard from her, so I hope she received her box and enjoyed the goodies I sent her way!

Now, here’s the info about Foodie Pen Pals if you are interested in signing up…

-On the 5th of every month, you will receive your penpal pairing via email. It will be your responsibility to contact your penpal and get their mailing address and any other information you might need like allergies or dietary restrictions.
-You will have until the 15th of the month to put your box of goodies in the mail. On the last day of the month, you will post about the goodies you received from your penpal!
-The boxes are to be filled with fun foodie things, local food items or even homemade treats! The spending limit is $15. The box must also include something written. This can be anything from a note explaining what’s in the box, to a fun recipe…use your imagination!
-You are responsible for figuring out the best way to ship your items depending on their size and how fragile they are. (Don’t forget about flat rate boxes!)
-Foodie Penpals is open to blog readers as well as bloggers. If you’re a reader and you get paired with a blogger, you are to write a short guest post for your penpal to post on their blog about what you received. If two readers are paired together, neither needs to worry about writing a post for that month.
-Foodie Penplas is open to US & Canadian residents.  Please note, Canadian Residents will be paired with other Canadians only. We’ve determined things might get too slow and backed up if we’re trying to send foods through customs across the border from US to Canada and vice versa.

If you’re interested in participating for July, please CLICK HERE to fill out the participation form and read the terms and conditions.

You must submit your information by July 4th as pairings will be emailed on July 5th!

Adventure Monday~ Kids Edition

So this weekend my roommate’s niece and nephew stayed with us, they are 6 & 4 respectively. Added into that equation was my roommate’s 12-year-old son, and our combined 4 cats and a dog. Needless to say we had a very busy household this weekend! I wasn’t able to play much with everyone on Saturday and Sunday because I was working, though I did get a pedicure from the 6-year-old on Saturday night and was able to see the bugs that they had caught on Sunday. Today, however, we all spent Adventure Monday together (minus the pets) at the Pacific Science Center here in Seattle.

We had lots of fun playing with all of the interactive exhibits and walking through the butterfly terrarium. Anyone who knows me well, knows that I love butterflies, so this of course was the highlight of the trip for me! The kids had a blast touching everything to see how it worked, viewing various bugs and reptiles (I stayed away from that exhibit) and watching the robotic dinosaurs.

A selection of butterflies

And some dinosaurs.

After the Science Center, we drove down to Tacoma to drop the kids off with their dad, we also dropped off my roommate’s son so he can spend the summer with his dad as well, then my roommate and I hit the casino before heading home, where I quickly turned my $20 into $60, then spent the rest of the evening playing on my winnings. I ended up breaking even and had a great time! Now we are relaxing with a movie and some cocktails!

Also on today’s agenda was our produce delivery from Full Circle.

Green grapes, baby lettuces, spinach, cucumber, plums, apriplums, oranges, and avocados today!

What was your latest adventure?

Every once in a while I have a month that just goes incredibly awry. I really don’t know why, but every 6 months or so I seem to have a month where I just can’t get it together, and June has definitely been one of those months. I am not saying that June has been bad in any way, I have had a lot of fun, discovered some new guilty pleasures, had some great workouts, lost weight and read some great books. But, I have also been incredibly distracted and have not focused on my goals as I should be. I have spent hardly any time on the internet in June, which means that I have not been interacting with many of my friends in the blog world or on Spark. I am behind on the blogs that I read and have not been posting to my own blog as I had hoped I would. And we really won’t talk about how far I am away from reaching my June challenge goals!

But really, that’s ok. I am allowed to have an off month every so often, especially when I am still making forward progress in the big things. The month is almost over, I am working on getting my focus back in line and making plans for July… not only a challenge for the month, but also my big year-long project that I want to kick off after my birthday. For the rest of June I am going to focus on getting back online each day to go through my emails, read blogs and post. I will also be preparing for my new challenge and project that are coming up soon. Plus I’ll be making plans for my birthday weekend… anyone want to join me in my celebrations??

Monday’s Story

Today was a pretty chill day all the way around. The weather was rainy and kind of cold, so we kept things nice and easy for our adventure and went to the movies and ran some errands. While not as exciting as some of our other adventures have been, it was still a really great day.

I love that I get along so well with my roommate and we are able to get out together at least once a week and have a good time. Sometimes its like today and we run errands, other times we hike, and still others we go out on the town for the evening. And then there are the days we just sit in front of the TV.

Today started out with me getting some things done around my room and a couple of episodes of Prison Break (of course). Then we headed out to the bank, Target and the movie theater. My roommate had a gift card for the movies, so she treated me and we saw Hunger Games. This was the 3rd time I had seen it, but Joanna hadn’t seen it yet and I knew she would enjoy it. And I still enjoyed it as much as the first time as well. After that it was time to hit the pharmacy and come home to start dinner. We have an unspoken arrangement where she cooks the main course and I do the veggies… we’ve never discussed this, it just sort of happens. After dinner came a few more episodes of Prison Break (I told you I was obsessed). Now I am finishing up some stuff on the computer (still trying to get caught up on all of the blogs I follow) and getting ready to settle down to read before bed.

While today wasn’t filled with new experiences, it was just what I needed to relax and refocus.

Today’s other highlight was of course my produce box:

Thos order included bananas, pancake mix, green leaf lettuce, red spring onions, zucchini, red potatoes, apricots, radishes, peaches, nectarines, red grapes & whole wheat cider bread.

What are your favorite summer produce items?

The Week Ahead

This week I really need to focus on getting back on track. I have put together some meal plans and am trying something completely different for my lunches this week. Usually I will bring something from home or go out for lunch, but I decided this week that instead of eating my regular carb filled lunches (I am a carboholic) I would have a protein shake and an energy bar for lunch. Thankfully these are readily available for me everyday considering where I work, and they cost less than a typical lunch out. My two favorite protein shakes right now are Svelte (their chocolate flavor)

and Isopure Smoothies (I like all 3 flavors)

As far as the energy bar, there is no competition. The Cocoa Cassava bar by Dr Mercola is my all-time favorite bar!

I am also getting back on track with both my workouts and my blog. You should be seeing new postings from me all week, including an Adventure Monday and produce box delivery blog tomorrow! And my goal is to get to the gym at least twice this week for classes.

The biggest obstacle to me getting everything back on track is my current obsession with Prison Break, so I am making some ground rules for myself on when I can watch and how many episodes I watch each day. If I let myself, I’ll just sit there watching episode after episode on Netflix.

That’s all I have to say for now… until tomorrow…

What is your go-to lunch?

Challenge Update

Needless to say with the way my month has gone so far, I am not as far as I was expecting to be in my June Challenge. The good news though is that there is still time to pull things out and make some real progress working towards my goals.

Here is where things currently stand:

Blogging 7/30= 23%

Breakfast 14/30= 47%

Mileage 30.5/100= 30%

Squats 290/1000= 29%

Crunches 250/1000= 25%

Pushups 210/1000= 21%

Gym classes 0/5= 0%

So on the whole, even though we are halfway through the month, I am only 25% of the way to my goal. I really need to turn things up over the next 2 weeks in order to hit at least 80%!

Catching Up and MIA

What started out as 1 missed blog post turned into over a week of not being on the internet at all. I didn’t check my emails, read any friend’s blogs, update my status, blog, anything. Why did I spend 8 days completely away from the internet? The honest truth is I don’t know.

I had a difficult and emotional week where I was incredibly stressed about money and my future and I completely shut down. I didn’t do much of anything during that time frame other than watch Prison Break and hang out with my roommate. I of course did go to work every day and continued to walk to and from work most days, though I did take the bus more frequently than I should have. I am pretty far behind on my goals for June, though still think I am in a place to reach most of them. Obviously I won’t be reaching the blog everyday goal considering I missed a full week of blogging.

I am not going to make any excuses for what happened, it happened and now its time to get back on track and move forward. So, to get back on track, with a modified Friday 5, here are 5 things that I have done while I wasn’t blogging:

1. Walked Green Lake with my roommate on our Adventure Monday and saw a beautiful crane, a gaggle of geese (with goslings) and a young eagle.

2. Sold some old jewelry and DVDs to raise some money

3.  Watched the entire Prison Break series (all 4 seasons)

4. Eaten halibut for the first time… and enjoyed it.

5. Locked myself out of the house and had to be rescued by friends of my roommate

I WILL be back tomorrow with an update on my June Challenge, and am catching up on all of my emails and the blogs I follow today.

What have you been doing this past week?

This is probably going to be my shortest blog ever…

I have to confess that I have stalled out a bit over the last several days. I have been feeling mildly under the weather, but nothing major, not enough that it should limit me too much. Unfortunately I have taken advantage and not really accomplished much. My hip has also been bothering me, so I am easing off on my walks a bit. I am not sure what is going on, if I’ve got some sort of low-grade virus or if I just have a case of the blahs, but either way, I need to get my momentum turned around in the right direction!

How do you get yourself going again?
